The last time the kids were home we played a couple hands of Apples to Apples. We always make riotous memories when we play this card game, and - we always laugh. Sometimes, especially when Ashley and my Mom are a part of the story, we laugh until we get a stomach ache. Mom wasn't visiting this time, but Ashley can usually be counted on for the quick wit and, Jeff fills in with his quiet, unassuming wit. I've been known to slide a few good ones across the table, too. They come out of nowhere.
All the adults played plus Wyatt. Wyatt is just 11, so too young to play the adult version of Apples to Apples. One has to have an awareness of people, places, and things that go beyond what an 11 year old can muster. However, we used to allow John and Jarrod to play when they were in early high school and their naivete, while frustrating at times, could be hilarious. Sure, we rolled our eyes, but it was pretty funny, too, and all apart of those memories we hold so dear. Plus, John and Jarrod were groomed on Apples to Apples and they've grown and are mostly aware of the people, places, and things that make up the Apples to Apples card game that I'm sure Wyatt will become also with years of practice.
For these games, while there was some laughter, it was a pretty laid back couple of hands, comparatively. But, as always, we had a blast! One never knows how the minds of the players are going to lean toward, so we were often surprised. It's pretty interesting to watch, though. For instance, if I have the green apple card, Jeff knows me well so he knows how I will lean, if it involves character, and what my likes and dislikes are and thus can throw down appropriately and will likely win my green apple (if he has a good hand). And, Ashley likes the snarky, playful throws that will make her laugh, yet they cannot be to far out there; it's a fine line to navigate.
For this two page, 4 x 8 size I used two designers, Ali Edwards' (of course) PLAY Story kit and another clean and simple designer, In a Creative Bubble.
